Know any young women whom still blast the likes of Gang Starr, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Eric B. & Rakim, Special Ed and more, like those legends just dropped their most known tracks this year? Well here's one. Illanee Corona.
Between being born, raised and schooled in Atlanta, GA to also being raised equally back and forth in the northeast- this amazing artist is cultured in ways that you would never know unless you sit and have a talk with her, or simply listen to her music. Past the stern New York accent is a southern belle. Past the laid-back Atlanta exterior is a daring Boston spirit. She received primary and secondary education from Atlanta's prominent magnet and performing arts school: DeKalb School of the Arts. For 7 years there she danced, acted and more- but her love for poetry and writing would go on away from her major and minor study. She began writing around 3rd grade and has never stopped since. By her freshman year in high school many students of all grades, and even the teachers, knew that if there was an assignment regarding words that Illanee had it in the bag, as she kept her composition rhyme book on top of her textbooks walking through the halls.
In the midst of the current environment of mainstream rap, this tri-city native stands firm amongst a slew of people whom require songwriters for even the most elementary of lyrics and melodies. When you have an ultimate 'rap-head' whose household commenced their Sunday cleaning to Big Pun, The Lox and M.O.P. since she could remember... a 30+ year old trap, mumble or gimmick rapper doesn't really line up.
Illanee Corona brings a raw, natural 90's energy to the forefront and although she prefers to perform over DJ Premier beats, she is also still able to takeover more modern productions. She has consistently soaked up the mainstream industry behind the scenes. Everything from learning the history of famous record executives at the 3 Major labels to watching how hosting and club appearances feed into a brand. She even gained experience backstage on multiple cities of Atlantic Record's artist, Ugly God's "Same Pants Different Tour" tour in 2017. Illanee has always captured the attention of many without ever having to force the draw-in.
Her upcoming, debut extended play entitled CS1: SFiftyFour is set to release soon under Mercury Vault Records. It is the first volume in a planned 'Club Series'. SFiftyFour pays an homage to the world famous 1970's Studio 54 discotheque in New York City. Drawn into the hedonism of the era, Illanee Corona shamelessly exploits the similarities of that era to current times, all while simply speaking on her personal life. As you listen to her heartfelt, analytical, lyrics and metaphors, the soulful samples and beats engulf you into forgetting you're listening to a new artist...but not exactly taking you completely back to the early 90's either. She projects to leave you fused between the era of Quaaludes and the current era of Molly- wondering how you even came across the album in the first place. The most recent single Corona's Theory, was released on December 5th, 2020 and is available worldwide, on all streaming platforms. Future release dates will be released upon configuration.
